Bay and Bay Transportation provides tips for truck drivers in the Midwest during tornado season
As anyone that lives in Tornado Alley knows, tornado season is in full swing. Late spring and early summer is when twisters are plentiful across the US. Bay & Bay Transportation truck drivers travel many of the roads that cross all over America, including right smack dab in the middle of Tornado Alley.
When you’re out on the road, running into inclement weather is always a worry. Snow and ice are typical situations, but tornados are different. They can form quickly within heavy rainstorms, giving truck drivers little time to get off the road and to safety.
There are a few signs of an impending tornado that can help truck drivers start heading to safety. These signs include:
- A green colored sky
- Low lying, large, dark clouds
- Large hail
- A loud roar of rain, similar to the sound of a train
If you do find yourself in the midst of a tornado, do not try to outrun the twister. Also, it’s a common misconception that seeking protection under an overpass is the safest option, but this can actually be more dangerous. The risk of begin injured by wind-driven debris is increased in these areas. If you are stuck on the road with an imminent tornado, get yourself as far from other vehicles as you can. Take shelter in a gully, ditch, or low lying area, and protect your head.
Tornados are usually accompanied by heavy rainstorms. If you are new to the area you are driving through, and see that signs from above signaling a tornado, be sure to tune in to the local radio. Updates on the weather situation will provide you with timely warning so that you can take shelter somewhere off the road.
