Truck Drivers in Houston and elsewhere across Texas are being asked to keep watch for more than distractions, delays, and other safety issues. Under a recently enacted law, they’re also being encouraged to look for people being transported to places against their will.
The state of Texas estimates that around 300,000 people are affected by human trafficking. Many of them are youths, forced into prostitution or other forms of illegal practices.
The Interstate 10 corridor, which travels through Houston, is the number one route for traffickers, and truckers often see them at truck stops and other places along the road.
Under the new law, those who apply for a trucker or commercial driver’s license in Texas will also receive information on how to identify signs of the crime and how to report it.
Public colleges and schools that offer commercial driving programs will have to include education on how to recognize and prevent human trafficking.
At this point, there’s no educational requirement for existing commercial drivers, but supporters are hopeful it’ll give them more eyes and ears on Texas roadways. Currently, Ohio is the only state with a similar law on the books.
Advocates say it’s another tool to liberate victims and to help those who are trapped to escape from whoever is forcing them to do things against their free will.
It’s also possible a bill aimed at boosting penalties for traffickers and improving protections for victims could be passed sometime soon. Several other human trafficking bills are currently being debated in the Texas legislature and could be approved as well.
