When it’s time for the State Fair again, it’s also time for haulers who deliver to the Great Minnesota Get Together to plan-ahead.
The crowds are large, the parking scarce, and there is usually a good amount of construction to be found on the heavily traveled highways near the fairgrounds.
But local and longer range truckers will soon have a new variable to worry about on a major route into Minneapolis. Beginning after Labor Day, Minnesota’s Department of Transportation is ready to start work on a long overdue update to Interstate 35W.
It will move along in stages and over the next four years, several things on 35W between downtown Minneapolis and Highway 62 Crosstown, farther South will receive upgrades.
It’s an important stretch of road because 35W crosses some of the busiest places for slowdowns and lost time on roadways in the entire state of Minnesota.
The first noticeable change will require the closing of the Franklin and Portland Avenue bridges so they can be redone.
It’s only a start and truckers shouldn’t expect to see any major lane or ramp closures until spring of next year. In all, nearly a dozen bridges will be replaced, others will be repaved, noise walls will be extended, two new exit ramps will appear, and express lanes will be added.
It adds up to a lot changes, additional detours, and hopefully a quicker drive through Minneapolis for haulers and other drivers when it’s finally completed.
